Overwatch 2 Requires Additional Development Time So it Can be a “Worthy Successor to the First Game”

Announced back in 2019, the wait for Overwatch 2 has been frustrating for series fans, made even more frustrating by the fact that support for the first game has dried up significantly as Blizzard focuses its efforts on the sequel’s development. Reports that development on the game is progressing slower than expected and confirmation from Activision that the shooter won’t be launching this year haven’t helped matters- but Blizzard remains insistent that it will take as much time to release the game as necessary, as it looks to release a game that can be considered a worthy follow-up to its predecessor.

Speaking at the recent BlizzConline Overwatch 2 panel, game director Jeff Kaplan explained that Blizzard is taking so long to work on the game because it wants to release to be “the worthy successor to the first game” and “a true sequel.”

“I think we need some more time till we can say it’s perfectly polished in the way that we want it,” said Kaplan. “We’ve made such incredible strides since we first announced this and showed it to the community at BlizzCon 2019. We want to create something that really moves people, that really touches people… We want it to become part of your life and for you to experience it… Our goal is for Overwatch 2 to be the worthy successor to the first game, to be the next evolution, to be a true sequel.”

At BlizzCon, we did get to see plenty of the game, including new maps and updated looks for returning characters, while Blizzard also revealed several new details on the game’s Hero Missions– so at least those who’re waiting for the game’s launch haven’t been left completely in the wind.

Overwatch 2 is currently in development for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC, though given its potential release timeframe, it’s more than a little likely that it’ll end up coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S as well.
