Baldur’s Gate 3 Director on Golden Joystick Awards Win: “That’s the Thing You Would Never Expect”

It’s no secret that in a year of incredible games, Baldur’s Gate 3 is arguably at the top. Not only is it the highest-rated game of 2023 on Metacritic and Opencritic, but of its 353,326 user reviews on Steam, 96 percent are positive for an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating.

With The Game Awards coming up in December, it’s perhaps unsurprising that Larian Studios’ RPG has scored big at the recent Golden Joystick Awards, winning Best Storytelling, Best Visual Design, PC Game of the Year and Ultimate Game of the Year. Speaking to GamesRadar, Larian founder and game director Swen Vincke said the win was unexpected.

“That’s the thing that you would never expect. Because we didn’t know, we didn’t compromise a lot. You know, we tried to make everything as approachable as possible, but we didn’t really compromise on it. So the common wisdom would be ‘compromise to make it accessible to a large audience’. So that shows you the intelligence of the gamer audience, which is really a good thing.”

Baldur’s Gate 3 is available for PS5 and PC, with the Xbox Series X/S version launching before the year is out (rumors point to December 6th). Vincke posted an update for the Xbox Series S version, indicating that its RAM and VRAM usage had dropped by about 10 percent and 24 percent. Head here for more details.
