Xbox has traditionally never had much of a foothold in Japan. A number of reasons have come together time and time again over the years to see the brand seeing less than stellar sales in the region and being significantly outsold by Sony and Nintendo. In recent years, however, Microsoft has renewed its efforts to increase its marketshare in Japan, and the results have certainly been visible.
In fact, the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S have collectively already outsold the lifetime sales of the Xbox One. As per the most recent Japanese sales data published by Famitsu, the Xbox Series X/S’ total sales stand at over 260,000 units. That’s well over twice as much as the total lifetime sales of the Xbox One, which stand at over 114,000 units.
It’s worth noting, of course, the the Xbox One was by far the weakest performing Xbox system in Japan, though given the fact that the Xbox Series consoles have only been out for less than two years, the fact that they’ve already more than doubled their predecessor’s sales in the region is impressive, to say the very least.
Lately, some weeks have also seen the PS5 being outsold by Xbox Series X/S in Japan, though to be fair, that’s been down to Sony’s struggles with supply shortages. Even so, it’s abundantly clear that Xbox has gathered noticeable momentum in the region.
