Infinity Ward has been the Call of Duty studio for as long as it’s been around – some would even say it’s the Call of Duty studio – and the developer certainly has its hands full with upcoming instalments in the franchise, with Infinity Ward being the lead team on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0, both of which are due out this year. It seems, however, that the studio has some other things in the works as well.
As spotted recently by Charlie Intel, a job listing for the position of Narrative Director in Infinity Ward’s Poland studio recently went up, and if that listing is anything to go by, the studio is working on an unannounced AAA game that, interestingly enough, is an open world RPG. That is something that the listing mentions very specifically, while there’s also mention of “non-linear narratives in open world games” and, under the responsibilities section, “creation of the game story, characters, lore, and world building”.
That job listing has since been removed, interestingly enough (though you can check out screenshots of it in the tweet below), so take that as you will. Whether this game is a Call of Duty offshoot or something else entirely remains to be seen, but it sure is exciting to consider the possibility of Infinity Ward trying to make a kind of game that’s completely different from what it’s always been known for.
How long we have to wait before this gets officially announced remains to be seen, but there’s a good chance that it’ll be quite a while.
