David Chase Wants To Do Another Sopranos Movie, HBO Max Wants Another Series

Sopranos creator David Chase has revealed in a new interview that it may be a while before we find out what's next for the franchise, following the prequel movie The Many Saints of Newark. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, it sounds like Chase wants to do another movie but WarnerMedia and HBO want him to do another series.

Chase said he is "not that anxious" to do another series, and says the pressure for that over another film is because "the movie didn't do well in theaters." (He also noted that the movie "broke the machine on streaming" and "was huge.") The Sopranos writer, director, and producer said he already has an idea for a movie in mind, but didn't reveal any details. He did reveal that it's been made known to him that "they want me to do another series of Sopranos from the time the movie ends until the time the [original] series begins."

The Many Saints of Newark was released on October 1, and features James Gandolfini's son Michael taking on the mantle of playing a younger Tony Soprano. Reviews were pretty split on the film, which is partially intended to explain how Tony wound up pursuing life as a mafia family boss.
