Reports emerged yesterday that a Borderlands spinoff was in development, and closer to launch than you’d expect. Not, Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox Entertainment, has taken two Twitter to confirm that a new Borderlands game is indeed in development.
For starters, Pitchford stated that Gearbox, contrary to what some have been speculating, is going to be the lead developer on any and all future Borderlands game, rather than assisting or co-developing any of them. In a subsequent tweet, he suggested that Gearbox is already working on the next Borderlands game, plugging the studio’s careers page for anyone who wants to work on the series and saying, “we’re working on the big one.”
The aforementioned rumour did mention that the next Borderlands game was going to be a spinoff of sorts and would be quite different from what is normally expected of the series, so it should be interesting to see what direction Gearbox takes it in.
A month back, it was announced that Gearbox had been acquired by Embracer Group, but that 2K Games would continue to publish all future Borderlands games.
I am told of rumors that Gearbox is "assisting" or "co-developing" another Borderlands game (or a new spin-off game). These rumors are NOT accurate. Gearbox is lead dev of any future games in the Borderlands franchise (or any Borderlands adjacent games) with no co-development.
