Sony’s latest quarterly financial report paints a pretty good picture of the company’s hardware sales with the PS5 shipping over 7.8 million units worldwide. Its software numbers are pretty strong as well. As Niko Partners senior analyst Daniel “ZhugeEX” Ahmad pointed out on Twitter, 338.9 million games have been sold for the PS4 and PS5 in the past fiscal year ending on March 31 2021. About 65 percent or 220 million of that number was digital.
This is higher than the previous year’s ratio of 53 percent. About 17 percent or 58.4 million titles were first-party games, which makes sense considering Sony’s slate blockbusters like Ghost of Tsushima, Demon’s Souls, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and The Last of Us Part 2. PlayStation Plus is also performing well with 47.6 million subscribers to end the fiscal year.
Total monthly active users for the PlayStation Network is slightly down though, hitting 109 million compared to the 114 million from last year. Even with its lower position in Japan (compared to the likes of Nintendo) and global chip shortages, Sony is still extremely dominant in the console space. As for the future, a new State of Play debuts tomorrow with information on Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart so stay tuned for more details.
