Oddworld: Soulstorm, like most other new releases right now, is a cross-gen title, and as is the case with any cross-gen game, there’s questions about how optimization for one generation of hardware is going to affect the other. With Oddworld, however, developers Oddworld Inhabitant say they have taken steps to ensure that at its core, the game offers the same core gameplay experience on both PS4 and PS5.
Though Oddworld: Soulstorm does, of course, have some PS5-specific features, as far as optimization is concerned, it tries to maintain a similar experience. On the PS4, the game runs at 30 FPS (as opposed to 60 FPS on the PS5), while the number of NPCs on-screen (which can go up to a hundred at times) is the same across both consoles.
“We set out to ensure that PS5 and PS4 players enjoyed a nearly identical core gameplay experience. You’ll see the same number of NPCs on the screen (sometimes 100s) with explosions and high-octane action,” Oddworld Inhabitants co-founder and Soulstorm creative director Lorne Lanning wrote in an update on the PlayStation blog. “To achieve this, the PS4 runs at 30 frames per second whereas the PS5 runs at 60 frames per second.”
Oddworld: Soulstorm is available now on PS5, PS4, and PC, and is free for PS5 owners subscribed to PS Plus through the end of this month. The game also offers free PS4-to-PS5 upgrades. Meanwhile, if you’re going to play the game on PC, you can check out its system requirements through here.
