The games industry has entered a period of consolidation, with developers and publishers all over getting bought out by larger players in the market who look to secure major IP and talent. Many have predicted that this is likely going to continue for a while, and according to journalist Brad Sams, some major names in the industry are still looking to make such acquisitions.
Sams said in a recent video that as per things he’s heard about conversations behind closed doors, there’s major interest in acquisitions at several companies, with Microsoft, Amazon, and Google reportedly beind heavily involved in such discussions. Sams also states that Sony is also making some moves, though not on the same level as the three aforementioned companies, and states that EA – who recently acquired Codemasters – is still interested in further buyouts.
As per Sams, there are at least three studios in the industry that are the subject of major interest for acquisitions from bigger companies in the industry. He says that though it’s hard to nail down exact dates for when we might hear something about these details, it’s likely going to be in the near future. Microsoft have mentioned that they’re still looking to add to their first party lineup, while Google and Amazon are, of course, looking to build out their portfolios as well, so it doesn’t seem like much of a stretch.
This is, of course, unconfirmed as of now, but given the recent trend of acquisitions in the industry, it’s not outside the realm of possibility. Stay tuned, and we’ll keep you updated should we learn anything more.
