THE WHAT? Scotland has become the first country worldwide to offer free sanitary provisions for those that need it, a landmark move that follows a four-year campaign.
THE DETAILS Looking to shift the narrative around menstruation, the Period Products (Free Provision) (Scotland) Act, was unanimously agreed upon by MSPs at the Scottish Parliament, with the bill brought forward by Labour health spokeswoman Monica Lennon.
Having been working on the campaign since 2016, Lennon stated that the bill was a ‘”practical and progressive” piece of legislation made more imperative by the pandemic.
THE WHY? The passing of the Scottish act paves the way for other countries to follow suit in the fight against period poverty. Scotland’s Communities Secretary Aileen Campbell stated that it was a significant moment for gender equality.”
Lennon said, “On the issue of period dignity, I am beyond proud that Scotland is leading the way and we have moved at a fast pace in a short space of time. We have got here because we have worked together. We have shown that this parliament can be a force for progressive change when we collaborate. Our prize is the opportunity to consign period poverty to history. In these dark times we can bring light and hope to the world this evening.”
