Next month it will be time for FIFA to make its next gen debut. We’ve gotten a few screenshots as well as some more in-depth details about what will be new in the PS5 version to its specific set of features. If you recall, the game released on current gen consoles and PC earlier in the year. The PC version was based on those versions, undoubtedly one of the reasons it was released beside them. For PC players hoping to get some of that sweet next gen goodness, well, you’ll have to wait until at least next year.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Executive Producer Aaron McHardy confirmed they would not be updating the PC version to keep the standard of what the new consoles can do. Some of them obviously couldn’t be done, like the PS5 DualSense and activity cards for instance, but the decision was apparently based more around keeping the specs for the PC version down. He said with the information they have available to them, they think it was the best move.

“When we looked at what generation to put the PC game on, we looked at our fans and what capabilities they had with the hardware they have,” McHardy said.

“And we have that information to understand what the power of the PCs out there in the world are. And when we looked at that, in order to run the gen five game, our min spec would have been at a spot that would have left a lot of people out in the cold not being able to play the game. So we made the choice to keep the PC version of the game on the gen four version of FIFA so that we can open the doors and be inclusive to everybody who wants to play FIFA.”

Like most sports franchises, the FIFA series will no doubt be cross-gen for at least a few more years, so it’ll be interesting to see if this ‘data’ McHardy is referencing means the upcoming PC versions will remain based on the PS4/Xbox One version or not. Only time will tell. Either way, FIFA 21 is available now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch and PC. The PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions are set to launch December 4th.
